The Best Use Of Homemade Solar Panels

What are the best ways to use homemade solar panels? Some people claim that homemade solar panels are a poor substitute for manufactured solar panels and are, at best, a fun "science experiment".

They support this claim by pointing out that homemade solar panels are not certified, which most insurance companies require before they will underwrite a home with solar panels installed on the roof.

Some people have also argued that homemade solar panels are less weather-resistant, due to the fact that it's difficult to emulate the sealing process manufactured panels undergo.

However, there is much to support the use of homemade solar panels.

For one thing, homemade solar panels are a great way to power a workshed, RV, cabin, or other off-grid structure.

One of the best ways to position your homemade solar panels is to place them on free-standing mounts. This makes them easier to access and clean, and in the event of an electrical fire, there is no danger of damage to the building it is powering.

Much of the debate surrounding homemade solar panels stems from a common belief that solar panel building is best left to "experts", which is understandably offensive to hobbyists, many of whom hold independence and "do-it-yourself" as strong ideals.

In my own opinion, I think homemade solar panels are best used in "off-grid" situations where insurance and grid-tied issues don't apply.

But I am always amazed at the ingenuity and pluck that do-it-yourself solar enthusiasts demonstrate by coming up with new and novel ways of building and using homemade solar panels.

Solar technology as a whole is still in its infancy and will continue to evolve and grow in ways we can only imagine - both for manufactured and homemade panels.
